Whether Renovating or Building Your Dream Home

The hidden costs of managing your own renovation.

You are wanting that dream kitchen and you have a Pinterest page full of ideas, but how do you get started? Let's say you find a great designer who can channel your every design preference, a contractor who knows the ins and outs of kitchen renovation, county permits, and is available within the next 6 months, and the special order orange quartz sink arrives on time. How lucky are you? Pretty darn lucky. Ideally, you would suspend your life for two weeks while the work is being completed, be available when the painter comes back with the wrong shade of mango sunset paint, to correct her before she has painted half the room. Be there to make last minute decisions about drawer pulls because they were never in the original design.

Now, imagine that none of it went as planned, the designer puts together a plan that is three times the amount you wanted to spend because the budget wasn't fixed ahead of time. The contractor is a no show for three days, and there is a stop work order because that same contractor did not pull a building permit. How quickly the dream kitchen becomes a nightmare money pit.

Granted these are two examples of the extreme, but when you apply Murphy's Law, it is not unfathomable that some things will go wrong.
